Time and precision are essential for the distillation of this OPIUS Nigredo 0.0%. The recipe for this Nigredo is inspired by ancient alchemist texts. The drink owes its name to one of the 4 alchemical stages. It is a non-alcoholic drink with notes of caramel, roasted coffee and toasted oak. To be enjoyed neat at the end of the meal, as a mocktail or cocktail.

Master distiller, Prof. Dr. Sas, based the recipes on secret manuscripts found in ancient alchemical archives. He deciphered a combination of techniques in which temperatures and timing became an obsession. The multifunctional pot caps have been specially designed for our unique process.

Their philosophy

Each batch of OPIUS, some 200 bottles, is made by hand. Temperature and timing play a crucial role in the triple distillation process developed by Professor Sas. The basis of any good product? Quality ingredients. OPIUS places great importance on finding the right botanicals and herbs with which to infuse its drinks. The names of the products refer to the scientific branch underlying the distillation process: alchemy, and in particular the search for the said elixir of long life.

Elixir of Life

The first step towards this elixir of long life? The scrupulous cleaning and transformation of all ingredients into a dark and uniform material. This step symbolized by a crow has become a metaphor for confronting our internal darkness. His name: “ nigredo ". OPIUS Nigredo is a dark, toasted non-alcoholic drink, with notes of coffee and caramel.

The dark matter is then purified. Impurities are removed in the step albedo, symbolized by the white queen. This is a metaphor for light in darkness. OPIUS Albedo gives tone with its fresh aromas and spiced with anise and cardamom.

The third stage, or work with yellow, is called amaro. Alchemists saw this phase as when a person's soul becomes wise. His symbol is therefore an old sage. OPIUS translated this step into a variant carried by the citrus.

Completing the first three phases gives access to the final stage of creating the elixir of long life: the rubedo. The interpretation of the work in red by OPIUS is a bitter made from orange and flowers.

The essence of OPIUS is the redefinition of spirits. The brand was born from the belief that an exciting drink doesn't always have to be alcoholic. Leander Beuckels and Lucas Lambrechts looked into the question with Benedikt Sas, professor at the University of Ghent. With its non-alcoholic spirits made from plants and herbs, OPIUS is not only looking to establish itself in the alcohol-free market, but also in the cocktail scene. The names of the articles refer to the scientific branch on which the products are based: alchemy and the search for the said elixir of long life.
